OverviewResponsible for overseeing the daily pre and post
analytical operations in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical
Laboratories. The main areas of responsibility include specimen
receiving, accessioning samples (blood, tissue, body fluid samples,
consult & outside material), processing and routing of samples to
the appropriate testing areas in a timely manner, and appropriately
storing/discarding samples after the completion of testing.
Phlebotomy services may also apply. Under the direction of the
Laboratory Directors and the Laboratory Manager, investigates,
writes and implements policies and procedures, ensuring compliance
with all applicable health and safety policies (JCAHO, CAP, state,
federal, and SHC). Establishes efficient and effective workflows
for these areas. Assigns work schedules for staff assigned to these
sections. Collaborates with other supervisors and staff in
identifying, planning and implementing process improvement
projects. Ensures all services are provided in accordance with
established procedures and in compliance with regulatory
requirements. Functions as front line staff, as

- Supervises laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine
procedures and workflows.
- Plans the daily lab operations, evaluates work performed,
assists in troubleshooting and provides direction in handling
procedural and workflow problems.
- Develops appropriate work schedules for employees and plans
daily work assignments in order to maintain adequate staffing,
minimize overtime, and meet customer service needs.
- Collaborates with section Medical Director and Manager to
develop and implement policies/procedures and quality control
measures to provide uninterrupted laboratory services in a timely
manner for phlebotomy, accessioning, receiving, processing,
routing, and storing samples.
- Monitors and evaluates equipment, systems and supplies to
ensure operational efficiency, reliability of results and adequate
inventory.
- Performs all human resource management responsibilities, with
support from operations manager, such as conducting employee
performance appraisals, transfers, interviews, hiring, onboarding,
disciplining, and termination of employees.
- Oversees training of staff and competency assessment.
- Develops training material and competency documents as
needed.
- Monitors and completes payroll to ensure accurate pay period
statistics. Prepares technical reports reflecting department
process volume, testing results, analysis, trends, conclusions or
recommendations for management and other hospital personnel.
- Performs front line work during staffing shortages to maintain
expected patient care standards.
- Ensures equipment maintenance is completed as scheduled and
coordinates service requests.
- Collaborates with Manager to determine capital equipment and
staffing needs.
- Oversees storage of documents, materials (blocks, slides),
transcription and dictation, and legal and research activities,
where applicable.
- Reviews workload statistics and KPIs to ensure quality targets
are met.
- Completes QA reports and addresses SAFE/iCARE events.
- Leads or participates in Quality Improvement projects.
- Ensures section compliance with all applicable regulations and
guidelines (CAP, JCAHO, state, federal and SHC).
- Oversees appropriate return of material or disposal of samples
according to established guidelines.
- Manages inventory.
- Responsible for reconciling labor and supply variances with
manager. Responsible for reviewing and staying within
budget.Education Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.Experience Qualifications
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible and directly
related work experience.Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions and interpret
results.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in
writing.

- Knowledge and technical proficiency in specialty areas assigned
within the laboratory.
- Knowledge of infection prevention policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements
related to areas of functional responsibility.Licenses and
Certifications
- PA (ASCP) - Pathologist Assistant Certification from the
American Society for Clinical Pathology preferred.These principles
