Job Description:
BioMarin is the world leader in delivering therapeutics that
provide meaningful advances to patients who live with serious and
life-threatening rare genetic diseases. We target diseases that
lack effective therapies and affect relatively small numbers of
patients, many of whom are children. These conditions are often
inherited, difficult to diagnose, progressively debilitating and
have few, if any, treatment options. BioMarin will continue to
focus on advancing therapies that are the first or best of their
kind. BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for
creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling
production of those drugs for the commercial market. These
engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and
maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites,
provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet
regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to
support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of
our drugs to patients. Come join our team and make a meaningful
impact on patients’ lives. SENIOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, NOVATO
TECHNICAL SUPPORT SUMMARY Novato Technical Support (NTS) at
BioMarin is the technical partner for commercial and clinical
operations and actively supports manufacturing processes throughout
the product lifecycle. We are an inclusive, high-performing, highly
motivated, and collaborative group looking for an innovative and
passionate individual with strong purification skills and
familiarity with large scale purification operations to become an
integral part of our downstream team. You will join a team of
scientists and research associates working to resolve manufacturing
challenges, evaluate new technologies, support technology
transfers, and facilitate continuous process improvement to ensure
robustness for our biologics production processes. Applicants who
have experience with lab scale purifications are preferred. The
majority of the work will be lab based, involving process
development, characterization, and optimization, along with some
execution of analytical methods. The individual will develop
experimental studies to troubleshoot and better understand
BioMarin’s manufacturing purification processes. This individual
must have strong communication skills, as they will be involved in
projects that involve presenting data to collaborators and will
assist in writing memos, protocols and reports. The ideal candidate
is a self-starter, who focuses on transparent and honest
communication, is dependable, cares intensely about helping others,
and is comfortable making decisions while dealing with uncertainty.
RESPONSIBILITIES You will assist in the design and execution of
studies to enable continuous process improvements of BioMarin's
manufacturing purification processes. Working with other scientists
in the team, you will operate bench scale filtration,
chromatography (on ÄKTA systems) and tangential flow filtration for
routine commercial manufacturing support. You will perform
analytical assays (HPLC, SDS-PAGE, western blot, microtiter plate
assays) related to experimental studies. You will support
investigations that help us understand and resolve complex
manufacturing issues and assess their potential impact to product
quality. You will evaluate raw materials for use in commercial
manufacturing processes. You will have opportunities to evaluate
novel technologies that will support current and future
manufacturing processes. As a researcher, you will document
experimental data, interpret results and support data analysis. You
will also assist in writing memorandums, protocols and reports. You
will contribute to safety, 6S and sustainability efforts in the
lab. REQUIRED SKILLS Bench scale purification experience on ÄKTA
system (including column packing and chromatography). Knowledge of
analytical assays (HPLC, SDS-PAGE, western blot, microtiter plate
assays) is a plus. Experience with troubleshooting of purification
processes. Accurate documentation of experimental work, data
analysis and results. Demonstrated record of strong communication
skills (oral and written). Proficient with MS Office, Excel,
PowerPoint. Experience with statistical software (e.g., JMP) is a
plus. Must be willing to work on multiple projects. A strong team
player with good collaborative and people skills. Strong
organization and prioritization skill, with attention to details
and ability for in-depth research and analysis. Highly motivated
with the ability to resolve technical issues, develop and implement
corrective solutions, be able to quickly adapt and respond
effectively to changes. EDUCATION B.S. degree in
Chemical/Biochemical/Biomedical Engineering or related disciplines
with 6 years experience in process development or manufacturing
sciences. M.S. degree in Chemical/Biochemical/Biomedical
Engineering or related disciplines with 4 years of experience. WORK
ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS This role is primarily onsite (5
days a week, 8-hour days) with occasional evening or weekend work
required. This role is primarily a laboratory position; contact
with chemicals is part of the job. The employee will be trained to
use common lab equipment and minimize exposure to hazards. Desktop
or laptop computer work is also a major component of the job. The
work environment characteristics described here are representative
of those an employee encounters while performing the essential
functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to
enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential
functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is
occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or
airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical
shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is
usually moderate. The employee may frequently be required to sit
and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand;
walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb
or balance; stoop, knee crouch, or crawl. The employee must
occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. We are an equal
opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive
consideration for employment without regard to race, color,
religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national
origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other
characteristic protected by law.
