The Research Scientist will be expected to provide leadership in the Maize Trait Commercialization - Product/Trait Efficacy (MTC-PTE) research group by developing protocols, executing multiple location experiments, collecting data, and analyzing results for the characterization and advancement of transgenic traits for maize and soybean, with a focus on insect control traits.The MTC-PTE research group works cross-functionally in the development and commercialization of agronomic, insect control and herbicide tolerance traits.Final product performance in the context of other trait technologies such as drought tolerance and herbicide tolerance will also be evaluated by the Research Scientist, ensuring an understanding and estimation of potential transgenic trait interactions.Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Designs, executes, and interprets experimental data from field trials to characterize the efficacy and agronomics of lead pipeline or licensed pre-commercial transgenic events against key target Lepidoptera and Coleoptera in the trait development process, relative to their planned use and product concept criteria.
  • Works with staff of other research locations when necessary to conduct wide area multiple site evaluations.
  • Understands and works within regulatory and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Participates/or leads cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams within Pioneer charged with the planning, management and execution of advancement/development plans for pre-commercial transgenic traits for insect control traits.
  • Provides leadership in support of successful product development at the Research Center and in the Business Unit.
  • The Research Scientist will contribute to Research Center activities and effectively communicate with other scientists as necessary to insure the success of all research programs at that center.
  • The Research Scientist will support the Business Unit by providing input on new products, and by providing technology updates and discussions.
  • Ensures data are analyzed with appropriate statistical tests and prepares written and oral summaries of research experiment results, often under very tight timelines.
  • Responsible for continuously updating his/her own scientific background in research areas relevant to transgenic trait characterization and development, with the ability to prepare materials for inclusion in internal and/or external publications when appropriate.
  • Recruits, hires, orients, supervises, and evaluates employees' performance; implements and monitors safe working practices. Qualifications sought Qualifications:
    • A Ph.D. in entomology, crop physiology or closely related field and minimum of 4-6 years of related research experience is required or equivalent amounts of education and experience.
    • Experience developing, executing, and reporting on field efficacy and agronomic trials designed to characterize performance of transgenic insect control products. Understanding of small plot research techniques leading to high quality data is essential.
    • Ability to take research projects from conception to completion, including conducting statistical analyses and interpretation of research results.
    • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams in a timeline-driven environment.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, good organizational skills and attention to detail. Understanding of product needs for North American maize and soybean markets.
